Fenac [(2,3,6-trichlorophenyl)acetic acid] and its sodium salt were incorporated in polyethylene matrices under varied conditions to afford a series of herbicide-polyethylene formulations. Diffusion within the matrix determined the rates at which the herbicides were released from the formulations into water. Release rates of the herbicides were altered significantly if (a) the formulation curing conditions were varied, (b) the initial amount of herbicide in the matrix was varied, (c) the solubility of the herbicide was changed, or (d) if an additive was used. The results indicate that herbicide diffuses from the matrix through water-filled cracks and capillary channels.

Two sediment cores collected from beneath the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica describe the physical sedimentation patterns beneath an existing major embayed ice shelf. Core AM01b was collected from a site of basal freezing, contrasting with core AM02, collected from a site of basal melting. Both cores comprise Holocene siliceous muddy ooze (SMO), however, AM01b also recovered interbedded siliciclastic mud, sand and gravel with inclined bedding in its lower 27 cm. This interval indicates an episode of variable but strong current activity before SMO sedimentation became dominant. 14C ages corrected for old surface ages are consistent with previous dating of marine sediments in Prydz Bay. However, the basal age of AM01b of 28250 ± 230 14C yr bp probably results from greater contamination by recycled organic matter. Lithology, 14C surface ages, absolute diatom abundance, and the diatom assemblage are used as indicators of sediment transport pathways beneath the ice shelf. The transport pathways suggested from these indicators do not correspond to previous models of the basal melt/freeze pattern. This indicates that the overturning baroclinic circulation beneath the Amery Ice Shelf (near-bed inflow–surface outflow) is a more important influence on basal melt/freeze and sediment distributions than the barotropic circulation that produces inflow in the east and outflow in the west of the ice front. Localized topographic (ice draft and bed elevation) variations are likely to play a dominant role in the resulting sub-ice shelf melt and sediment distribution.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
In its resolution 687 of 8 April 1991 which presented to Iraq the bill for its invasion of Kuwait and for Operation Desert Storm, the Security Council among many other things demanded that Iraq (and Kuwait) respect the inviolability of their mutual international boundary. In the same resolution, the Security Council considered this boundary to have been recognized by both neighbouring states in ‘Minutes’ agreed upon in 1963. However, notwithstanding this agreement on the delimitation of the boundary, the Council also noted that the boundary was still in need of demarcation. In paragraph 3 of the resolution, the Secretary-General was called upon to assist Iraq and Kuwait in this matter and, in the same paragraph, received some instructions on how to proceed. On 2 May 1991, he reported to establish the Iraq-Kuwait Boundary Demarcation Commission.
The following pages analyse international jurisprudence, notably of the International Court of Justice and of the IKBDC, in support of the thesis that has long been advanced in international legal doctrine, that adjudication on territorial title is a sixth traditional mode of acquisition of territory in international law? ‘Traditional’, because, apart from cession, conquest, occupation, accretion and prescription, adjudication, too, was known in Roman law as a mode of acquiring dominion over property. However, it was the only one of these Roman law modes not adopted in international law.
